EA Seemlessly Merges Stupidity with Intelligence

Thanks to the NBA Jam fiasco, I'm not a big fan of EA right now. However, Trey Smith from EA had this to say during an interview with MTV:

What do you think is the biggest problem current games suffer from?
I think there are a number of problems we have with the way games are being developed today, but honestly, I think one of the biggest problems right now is the actions and attitude of some of the gamers out there. You know who they are. If they spent less time spewing ignorant hate on the boards and in online games, and more time rallying behind the great games they love and helping to build a thriving community that welcomes everyone that shows up to play with them - everybody wins. Nothing wrong with a little smack talk here and there, just wish gamers respected each other more. I just got back from PAX Prime down in Seattle. I am of the opinion that if the people of PAX ran the world, it would be a much better place. Costumes optional.

I agree, Trey. I hope in the future more developers and gamers do too.

I'm going to be honest, coming from someone like him, it sounds like he's trying to deflect blame away from him.

I agree. I think this is one of those, "Let's blame the customers, instead of ourselves."

If customers "love" a game, they will probably be more than happy to help build a "thriving" community.

When EA took part of NBA Jam's development team away, to develop the PS3/360 version, and kept playing a smoke-and-mirrors game with Wii owners about online, instead of just shooting straight...it's their own fault.

In the case of NBA Jam, specifically, yes, this would have been a lame attempt at deflection.

However, that interview wasn't focused on NBA Jam. I believe Mr. Smith was speaking generally.

PS - great to see you here, coffee!!

To be fair, I don't think Trey Smith is to blame for NBA Jam being ported to the other two systems. That was all because of corporate EA, and unfortunately he's stuck in the middle of it. Still, I'm sure the complaints over the game are what prompted that response, regardless of whether or not he truly feels that way.
