It's probably that refund you got if you actually paid for the Internet Channel.

People have suggested that as a possible explanation, but I do believe it has been confirmed that that is NOT the reason.

In fact, I think people already received that refund a while ago, no?

Yeah Mop_it_up purchased the Internet Channel when it cost 500 Wii points. I want to say that the users had to collect a game costing 500 Wiipoints before the end of the year in 2009.

I'm going to guess this was sent to people who have rarely/never visited the Wii Shop Channel, as an incentive to start downloading games.

Hmm, that wouldn't seem very nice.

If that were the case it's like they were punishing the people that pay attention to Nintendo's online presence.

In any case, we still need to know HOW these are getting received.

It sure looks like an email. But I don't even know what address Nintendo might have for me. So it doesn't seem like a very reliable way to hand out FREE MARIO.

I checked my email when this was posted here and I didn't see it. Regular mail I checked yesterday and I didn't see it. Wiimail nothing yet.

Don't worry about it. It's standard advertising practice to give discounts to new customers.

Giving away a free game to new customers is not nice? By that logic, price cuts aren't nice. The Wii is now $200; should everyone who paid $250 get a $50 refund?

Frequent customers have a rewards program: Club Nintendo.

Our misunderstanding stems from the difference between a new customer and a customer that previously had little or no interest in online Nintendo products.

Regardless, this is besides the point.

Point being: put the feelers out, people! We must get to the bottom of this!

I don't think you're going to get an official word on this.
Pretty much everyone I have seen who got this has either never downloaded a game, hasn't visited the Shop Channel in a while, or hasn't connected their system to the Internet. Considering the wording of the email, I think it is safe to say that this was given to people who rarely/never use the Shop Channel.

Yea, I guess you're right. I certainly haven't been able to gather any firsthand info myself.

Thanks for all the input, people!
