It's kind of a mini-game where you're turning a spit and pressing a button at just the right moment. If you press too early you get rare steak and if you press too late you get burnt steak, neither of which are that good at raising stamina.

However, if you press at just the right time you get well-done steak along with a passionate lady's voice sample going "So tasty!". I love it. It's how I like my steak done in real life too. You get the biggest stamina boost from this.

So I'm standing at the top of some waterfall looking around with my binoculars. I hear these cat things with backpacks nearby minding their own business and man... it's just nice hanging out like this... and eating well-done steak.

My inventory's bursting with loads of seemingly useless junk but I grab it anyway because I just don't know if it's gonna be useful or not. It's probably not the best way of doing things and by now I have a gigantic hoard of.... whatever.

I like those cats though. Their relatives near the bay I thought were ok too but the minute they stole something from me... DEATH. I beat the nine lives out of them and got my useless stuff back. That'll show 'em!

After a while of not doing much but collecting and hanging out I get an opportunity to do missions in a new area, a desert! When you're going there, stock up on some refreshing drinks.

I picked the first mission of the area which pretty much said to just hang out in the area for as long as I liked. Is this game adjusting to my thinking? I explored the desert and came across these weird sand shark things which were pretty cool. There was also an old guy whom I kept asking to give me stuff until he told me to get lost.

I then got a mission to take on my first big monster! It was a bigger version of those little ankle bitey things that gang up on you and puff themselves out. They all look like that dinosaur that spat all over Newman in Jurassic Park.

It wasn't too difficult, just kept cool with cool drinks, kept healthy with megapotions and kept a high stamina with well-done steaks and a lot of attacking.Rockethttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10062742353889439933noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7756333000723546217.post-4880964636449279552013-04-30T12:08:00.001-04:002013-04-30T12:10:44.094-04:00Rocket's adventures in MH3U Part 5: The big Tri server shutdownWell today's the day. The original Tri version of the game on the Wii is having its online multiplayer support switched off. I didn't play that version of the game much but the crew here at NinTemple had one last big session of the game the other night and had a whale of a time.

This support lives on in the Wii U's Ultimate version of the game. Maybe I'll do that someday. For now though, I'm here with the local-only 3DS version, taking a break from the missions and playing it like it was Animal Crossing or something. I run around the woods, looking at everything with the binoculars I just bought from the gal with the goods.

(after reversing the Y axis of course)Rockethttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10062742353889439933noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7756333000723546217.post-69532707822672962052013-04-24T19:36:00.000-04:002013-04-24T19:37:44.485-04:00Rocket's Adventures in MH3U Part 4: Collecting, collecting, collecting, RUNNING!So after I got someway comfortable with the controls I set out to get rid of the exclamation marks above the villagers heads by fulfilling their unfulfilled needs. I get some raw meat, I pick some mushrooms and herbs, I learn how to mine. I try to go through this part of the game as quickly as possible... and in my impatience I forget about one very important thing...

I take on yet another seemingly mundane mission about gathering resources. After a little bit of research from the literature I buy from the gal with the goods, I follow my lead to the very same area where I fought the Plesioth in the demo. After that stressful battle it felt weird being here doing something so normal. I dive into the water and gather what's asked of me. I then find myself short so I continue further into the next watery area.

*DUN!* sounds a dramatic, yet familiar, sound effect.

I immediately get this frantic text message on my magical monhun mobile tutorial telephone, telling me to get out of there because this gigantic creature called Lagiacrus had noticed me and I wasn't at all ready to face it yet. I hurried back into the previous water area.

The creature followed me!

All of a sudden the music from the Plesioth battle started playing. I swam back to shore as fast as I could, spotting the last bit of resources along the way. I quickly gathered the last of what was required and hightailed it out of the water. The running animation on my avatar changed to look like something from Tom & Jerry. It was hysterical!

On fleeing back to camp and delivering my stuff into the red box, I realised that important thing I had forgotten earlier: I forgot to actually have fun with this game; I forgot to chill out and enjoy the world that was having me.

I returned to the village. I bought a pair of binoculars.Rockethttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10062742353889439933noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7756333000723546217.post-6136295838500823172013-04-21T13:29:00.000-04:002013-04-21T13:29:47.774-04:00Rocket's adventures in MH3U Part 3: Teething stress & fatigueMy adventure begins by meeting the people of Moga Village. Having to talk to so many people and learning about the services they provide is tiring but I have to start somewhere I guess.

After all the introductions and yapping I head out into the woods. I then get all these mini text messages at the bottom of the screen telling me about the various controls and customisations. I navigate the labyrinth of menus to put the map, monster target and various other things on the bottom screen.

As soon as I move around I have to go back into the options menu to change the camera controls to "Flip X+Y". This is the type of camera I used during the N64 era and I'm too tired to focus on anything else right now.

Why are default camera controls in games nowadays completely backwards to the way they were during the N64 days?? The standard was set back then!

Now I'm grumpy as well as tired. Thank goodness the first couple of tasks only involve picking mushrooms and herbs.Rockethttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10062742353889439933noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7756333000723546217.post-76511789216677206342013-04-14T15:33:00.000-04:002013-04-24T19:38:21.169-04:00Rocket's adventures in MH3U Part 2: Shibata's apologyAfter the demo got me hooked I looked forward to the full game's day of release. When it finally came I set off on an eventful real-life quest to find and purchase a physical copy. GameStop were out of stock and they didn't have the newly released Circle Pad Pro XL either. They had the 3DS XL and Wii U bundles, but they weren't what I was looking for at that stage.

I contacted several other branches of GameStop and none of them had it in stock either. I then came across these tweets from Satoru Shibata, the lovely gentleman who hosts the European Nintendo Direct broadcasts:

I guess I should've expected the high demand. After all, there was an entire sub-culture waiting patiently for physical copies of this game to come out so they could buy and own them.

My 6th 3DS Game Card purchase became Luigi's Mansion 2, which came out a week later, well stocked and well advertised. The other day I finally found a branch of GameStop that had Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate in stock and that became my 7th.

My adventure will truly begin soon. For now though, I'm hunting ghosts!Rockethttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10062742353889439933noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7756333000723546217.post-85689357263470529652013-04-11T01:03:00.000-04:002013-04-24T19:38:46.183-04:00Rocket's adventures in MH3U Part 1: Playing the demoI don't even like this game that much.

However, when the demo came out a few weeks ago on the 3DS eShop, I got addicted to it. That's a strange thing for me, not particuarly caring for a game but not wanting to stop playing, yet that was the effect this demo had on me!

There were two monsters to hunt in this demo: Lagombi for beginners and Plesioth for veterans.

I chose the Lagombi hunt and went straight for it. It was this weird overgrown koala thing and it seemed all cute and peaceful, but that was before it noticed me. It started throwing snowballs and sliding all over the place in such fast crazy patterns. My character couldn't move that fast! Before long I was knocked out and brought back to camp on a stretcher. I looked up the electronic manual for more of the controls. I learned about sheathing to run, blocking, using items, using the lock-on and so forth. I raced back up the mountain, hugely determined to take on the beast once more. Much more cautious this time, I did a lot of attacking and running like the way a wolf hunts its prey but then the beast just absconded out of the area. I then ran out of time.

I was seriously thinking about giving up at this stage, especially considering little annoyances like getting pushed into the previous area I was in. This game was so austere and so much like hard work that it was almost scary how much I wanted to go back and play some more.

I spent a good while thinking about a purchase of the full game and about what I was getting myself into... I then rationalised that if I couldn't beat the two monsters then I wouldn't buy the game.

I started another session of hunting the Lagombi. You've only 20 minutes in the demo so I went much quicker this time, always worrying about my HP and the clock. This time I beat it.

Yeah! Now onto the Plesioth. It looked like a cross between the eel from Super Mario 64 and various other nightmarish things.

They weren't kidding when they said it was for veterans.... I had swimming to deal with this time too, and this creature was even faster and just thrashed all over the place. I lost time and time again and it seemed futile, just hacking away desperately at its ankles on the beach or scrawling at its back in the water. I felt lost, weary and frustrated and my fingers ached with the cold and from holding that little brick of a handheld.

I then started to check out the community and I gotta say, it was great. Chatting with MonHun fans and checking out their YouTube videos, I started to learn so much! I hope to get to know them more as I play.

I followed some good advice and made some changes. I chose the gunlance set up and did some preparation like eating steak to increase max stamina and kept myself as well prepared as possible.

After a few more trials and failures I noticed the Plesioth starting to limp and groan with weariness. Time kept running out so I had to get more and more efficient at what I was doing. After a couple of weeks of trying on and off I finally beat the monster.

Now that I had beaten the demo entirely I was in a much better place to make a judgement call on the purchase. I decided to buy the game.

I still don't like it that much, but damn it do I want to play some more!Rockethttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10062742353889439933noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7756333000723546217.post-61878749903397275722013-04-01T00:33:00.002-04:002013-04-01T01:00:31.004-04:00An Idea Whose Time Has ComeThere's just no use fighting it. It's time for our website to undergo some changes. For several years there has been one man with his finger on the pulse of the gaming industry. One man whose ability to predict the future borders on prescient. That man is Michael Pachter.

Oh, but you're one of the ultra minority that still doesn't believe in Michael Pachter, eh? You've got your head so far in the sand you haven't yet beheld the brilliance of Michael's predictions, eh? Well, buckle your safety belts cuz I'm about to drop a heavy dose of spray-tanned reality on you!!

August 2008: Pachter predicts Nintendo Wii will cut price.
Sometime later: Nintendo Wii cuts price.
BOOM! Predicted!

June 2010: Pachter predicts PS3 will cut price.
Sometime later: PS3 cuts price.
BAM! Predicted!

September 2011: Pachter predicts XBox 360 will cut price.
Sometime later: XBox 360 cuts price.
KA-POW!! Predicted!

Still don't believe me? Pachter says Nintendo is doomed. Don't agree? Well, roughly one billion years from now, our sun will begin transitioning to a red giant. At that time, the temperature on Earth will be so high all organic life will cease. What's Nintendo gonna do then, huh?? HUH?!? DOOMED!!!!!!

Our only hope as a species is that Pachter predicts a way to migrate to some other solar system. I say we begin giving Pachter his due now. Come, follow us into this new era, at the PachTemple!!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7756333000723546217.post-16092181539444525872013-02-10T16:31:00.000-05:002013-02-10T16:31:03.563-05:00Snowman LinkSo, we've gotten a decent amount of snow up here in Buffalo, NY. Not an insane amount like some areas, but a few feet. As of today, the temperature is starting to rise and the snow is starting to melt. The sun was out and there was virtually no wind. This all made for perfect snowman-building conditions! So, my wife and I took this Sunday afternoon and got on the ol' boots and gloves and gave it a try! We used some old Halloween costume accessories to give our creation a personality and thus Snowman Link was born!

We expect to see him as a playable character in the next game. Enjoy!
I got curious and looked for some Miiverse things and found an art site. Basically you sign up via email (make sure to use your Miiverse username because that is how they keep track of who the actual artist is). From there just get creative and let things flow.

When posting the art on the site make sure to only post your own artwork and include your Miiverse avatar as well in the picture.
I have a somewhat personal connection with the idea of Pandora's Tower being released in North America. Way back in April 2012, I ran a series of articles and investigative journalism concerning the likelihood of such a release (Article 1, Article 2, Article 3). The long and short of that situation is I had a GameStop manager and his employees telling me Pandora's Tower was in their system for a North American release.

The famous (and awesome) Operation Rainfall was kind enough to pick up our story (link) and even make follow-up reports on it. However, when I tried sharing this story with bigger Nintendo sites like GoNintendo and Nintendo World Report, they mostly shook their heads politely and said I wasn't a credible enough source to run the stories themselves. GoNintendo ran the first one and that was it.

A few weeks later, a NinTemple site visitor contacted us saying he heard a similar confirmation at his GameStop over 1,000 miles away. We ran that story. Then, unfortunately, that seemed to be the end of the discussion. No major sites really followed-up after that and the hopes of a North American release for Pandora's Tower started to fade quickly. By the beginning of 2013, the general opinion was so bleak that Jonathan Metts of Nintendo World Report commented Pandora's Tower had "no hope" of a NA release.

Well, shortly thereafter, we all got word straight from XSEED that the game would be localized under their efforts! Huzzah! "Sage is vindicated!" said some.

But, this story is not about me (well, sure, most of this article is but the overall story is not!). In fact, realistically, our contribution to this drama is more about faith than fruitful leads. And the entirety of this story is more about democratic action and rewarded faith. These three great games, Xenoblade Chronicles, The Last Story, and Pandora's Tower, the three games most synonymous with Operation Rainfall, were too good to be ignored and those of us who participated in Operation Rainfall knew that. We had a feeling action was worth taking because the cries for these games shouldn't be ignored and ultimately would not be ignored. People had been saying since November 2011 that games like The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword were the Wii's "swan song." They had no faith that all the great games of 2012, and now the third game in the Operation Rainfall trio, would be released.

But, now, in just a few months, I'll be able to look at my shelf of games, and see tangible proof that our faith was rewarded. So maybe, in the future, we can look back on rocky experiences like this and say "hey, sometimes it does all work out. Have a little faith!"Unknownnoreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7756333000723546217.post-66553908759244448422012-11-18T18:07:00.000-05:002012-11-18T18:07:58.859-05:00Wii U site chat happening now!Got a Wii U and want to talk about your experience with it? "To The Honorable Staff of Nintendo Power,

I write this letter to
you with a deep melancholy. I refused to believe the rumors that you
were closing down. Then, cold confirmation that you wouldn’t be there
for me after December. Anger took me, and tears fell whenever I
remembered a crucial fact. The fact that you and your magazine have
meant so much to me throughout my whole life. I was four when the first
issue came out, and I had just played Zelda II for the first time.
Though I could barely read, the bright pictures and maps in your
magazine helped me make it through the mazes of Death Mountain and the
mysteries of the secret town of Kasuto. I wanted to reach out; to help.
Hold a subscription drive, write letters to NCL, get the help of
Operation Rainfall and Starmen.net. I wanted to do something for you
after all you’ve done for me.

The most exciting piece of mail
I’ve received every month, to this day, has always been Nintendo Power.
It brings me so much joy to see what’s on the cover and what’s getting
reviewed. I should say it brings me that joy twice a month, as I’m
always excited for taking the power polls, too. My friends and I still
pull out old issues for help with retro games (of which I am a huge
collector), like when we played through Young Merlin for laughs on my
beloved Super Nintendo. I’m only missing a few issues in the entire run
of the magazine.

In all the tough parts of my life, Nintendo,
and Nintendo Power, were always there for me. When I didn’t think I
could make it in 6th grade, and thought about ending it all, NP saved me
with news of Super Mario 64 and Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire. When
my Dad said he was getting remarried and my life fell into despair, NP
was there with previews of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and hope
for the future. And as an adult, after wanting to give up after getting
laid off multiple times as an art teacher, NP made me feel like a kid
again with news of Silent Hill: Shattered Memories and The Legend of
Zelda: Skyward Sword.

Though sure, I check Nintendo blogs
obsessively, you hold a special place in my heart. I don’t want endless
bright screens of every little piece of news when I can have a beautiful
printed magazine to pore over. Even when news and screenshots from
Nintendo Power are posted online, I always to refuse to read those
articles until I’ve received my issue and can read it myself, straight
from the source. Honestly, I’m terribly depressed about a world without
you. I proudly wear my Nintendo Power Player shirt (a replica, as my
original fell apart from years of wear and tear.)

I’m including a
painting I started working on in August as soon as I found out the news
about the magazine ending. I poured my heart and soul into it. It’s the
expression of all the feelings I’ve had, tempered with the sadness of
losing you this December. It was really hard getting it done on time, as
I work two jobs and often don’t have the time or energy after work. I
pray that you will print it, and this letter, in one of your final
issues. None of my letters as a kid made it into the magazine, but you
Some characters might set up a tent and camp outside much like the first Animal Crossing game. These have been missing from the more recent AC games.

Visit the recycle shop for various materials. This also has been missing since the first game.

Help out your in-game
friends with purchasing decisions. This is new.

Use your office (as mayor) to make
decisions on putting things in town - you pick a location for
construction to begin on the items you plan on adding - megaphone is a
new item which lets you gather people -All of these are new and a great addition and I think most people have been wanting to run the town.

Shoe store offers up boots/shoes
for sale. This is new. Only thing that we could do with shoes was in City Folk and that was change the color of it in the city.

Museum store allows you to make custom-made signs. This is new.It offers some changes to your accessories.

Tom Nook
can help you make design changes to your house. I am sirmising that you can change the overall look of it.

Capture and sell your
own critters.That is old.

Dr. Shrunk returns at the club - you can now have many
more emotions. 20 in total. all of them will be saved.

Design/sell your own items,
which can eventually change during the process - much larger selection
of colors this time around when designing. The selling you items is new. And the much large palete of colors is welcome.

View the homes of
people you StreetPass. I believe you could see certain peoples houses if they got a really good HRA score in the city in City Folk but this is automatic. Trade items with StreetPass as well - take
picture via photobooth, bottom screen displays the picture you'll take.

Visit a massage parlor that helps to relax you and put you into a dream
stage - ability to explore the town of someone else - early morning
music is calm, dawn the music is more upbeat, afternoon is more
pleasant-sounding music, nighttime the music has more base, late night
music gets mysterious. This is basically the online mode I believe.

KK Slider takes on the role of a DJ at the club,
as well as his regular guitar gig.Expect a much greater
number of KK songs this time around - explore a town alongside other
people.

Travel via boat to an island and enjoy a song at the same time -
grab items from the bottom of the sea - collect rare bugs as well -
mini-games and various stores when you visit the island by boat -
Tortimer is the host of mini-games and wears a tropical shirt - one
mini-game has you trying to navigate a maze to collect a certain item.
